Controlling and measuring the success of internal communication in M&A processes - Bayer Schering Pharma AG

ICOM GmbH used the Internal Communication Index at Bayer Schering Pharma AG (the former Schering AG) before and after the acquisition of Schering AG by Bayer AG. The index results from 2005 helped with respect to optimization of the media mix and strategic orientation of internal communication to the new tasks involved in the acquisition and integration process. The project made it to the finals of the German Business Communication Award 2007 in the category 'Best Internal Communication'.

Project summary:
The then Schering AG introduced the Index Internal Communication as a tool for controlling internal communication as early as 2005. In the wake of the acquisition of Schering by Bayer AG in 2006, the detailed information from 2005 helped in terms of improving the media mix and determining strategic orientation in the acquisition and integration process. The success of the initiated measures was reviewed in 2006, again using the Index Internal Communication.The new results clearly showed that crises also provide major opportunities for communication, demonstrating that employee satisfaction with internal communication had improved significantly with respect to 2005.
